Project Summary

The famous gateway to the Himalayas, Kathmandu city, capital of Nepal, has been rocked (indeed even destroyed) by earthquakes on several occasions in its history. The last significant earthquake, the 1934 Bihar earthquake, leveled most of the city. Today Kathmandu is a bustling city of over … people. Yet of the thousands of buildings which house them, virtually none has experienced and earthquake, and very few have been designed to withstand them. This projects focuses on the schools which host the thousands students of the Kathmandu valley. The project is truly applied research, attempting to catalyze positive change to make school children safer from earthquakes.
